Jamaican dancehall reggae singer Konshens became an international star in the year 2005 with the hit single “Medz Pon Di Corner.”He spent his early days between the Up Park Camp military base, where his father was stationed in the Jamaica Defense Force, and Sherlock Crescent, a garrison community on the city’s outer fringes. Spence was married to Latoya Wright in Miami, Florida, in November 2017 and are blessed with two kids, Liam Spence & Sajhi Spence.
Konshens whose real name is Garfield Spence was born in Kingston on January 11th 1985.He first began making music as part of duo Sojah, along with his brother Delmark Spence (Delus) in their single “Pon Di Corner” which became a number one hit in Japan where Konshens got his’ first experience on tour.
After the duo released the Japan-only Sons of Jah album and completed another tour, they parted ways paving way for solo projects.
Konshens began releasing a steady stream of dancehall hits, starting up with “Winner,” “Rasta Imposter,” and “Insanity.” His songs would range from urgent, socially conscious pleas to sexually charged dance numbers. He made a guest appearance on Tarrus Riley’s 2009 hit “Good Girl Gone Bad,” from his album Contagious.
Konshens toured around the world and developed huge fan bases in Europe, Africa, and South America, but he still remained massively popular in Japan, and his debut album, Real Talk (which collected many of his early hits), was released exclusively in Japan in 2010. It was released by Japanese label Koyashi in 2010. A second album was also announced to be released in Jamaica on Tad Dawkins’ Tad’s International label.
His second album, Mental Maintenance, was released via his own Subkonshus Music in 2012 where he featured guest appearances by Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Voicemail, and others.
In March 2014, he became an official brand ambassador for Pepsi after which he released his 3rd studio album It Feel Good in 2018, a new joint venture between his Subkonshus Music and San Francisco-based Empire.
The 16-track album incorporates trap, R&B and other melodic flavors with featured guest appearances from Shaggy ,Rick Ross, Chris Brown, Tarrus Riley and Rvssian
In 2020,Konshens released his 4th studio album titled ‘Soca Virgin’
Among Konshens impressive hits are The Realest Song, Bruk Off Yuh Back, Winner, Pull Up to Mi Bumper, Gal a Bubble, Pretty devil, Get Money, Sidung, Physically fit among others.
“From the get go, people misinterpreted the name Konshens and thought it means conscious,” Konshens says, explaining his complex, and sometimes, misunderstood identity. “I always did badman tunes, gyal songs, all aspects [of dancehall]. It took a big gyal song to create this idea of a transition, but I am just an artist approaching however I am feeling on a certain day. There is no limit to what I would say or do, once I am comfortable with it.”Konshens
