Khaligraph Jones is an influential Kenyan rapper with a style so unique and a flow so flexible, Khaligraph cuts across the complexity of genres and eras with his music.
Jones was born Brian Ouko Robert on the 12th of June 1990 in one of Kenya’s Eastland area, Kayole 1960 enabling him to know the vices that are usually bombarded and instigated to them while living in the ghetto. Jones is arguably considered to be the face of Kenyan Hip Hop and has been through all the obstacles that one can go through when you are surviving in the ghetto. It is through all this that he chose music over everything else that ghetto has to offer.
Khaligraph’s journey as an artist began at a young age and was inspired by listening to a wide variety of music. He was more drawn to the Hip Hop genre and when an opportunity presented itself in the form of the 2009 Channel O MC Africa Challenge, the then 19-year old took it up and went all the way to the finals. It was from that competition that the rise of Khaligraph Jones started to become evident.
Khaligraph who was influenced by his elder brother to take up the art started doing music seriously in 2007 and has grown to establish himself as a force to reckon with in the music industry having released his first track in 2004 at the age of 13. He grew to be a bilingual emcee who specialized in battling and freestyling.
The talented rapper who fell in love with music at a very young age is known for his lyrical prowess that has endeared him to many Hip hop lovers in the country. While still young, the hardships he encountered in Nairobi’s Eastland’s made him fall in love with Hip hop music because that’s where he could express himself comfortably.
Khaligraph who can rap comfortably in both English and Swahili is one of the few rappers in the country who has mastered the art of the game.
He has since coined a popular phrase “Respect the OGs”; a slogan in Kenya’s Hip Hop scene. The intention of the movement is to promote talented youth from all over the country, no matter their age, and give them a platform to grow and be heard.
